10 promising Indian youngsters to watch out for

1. MAMPI DAS (SHOOTING)

Mampi Das is India’s youngest shooting star from West Bengal and is considered to be India’s biggest hope in 10m air rifle women. Mampi Das, who announced her coming of age by matching the world record score of 400/400 in women’s 10m air rifle in the National selections trials at the Shivaji Chatrapati Sports Complex at Pune on 2nd September 2012, has also won the Gold medal at National Shooting Championship in New Delhi on January 24, 2011 and Gold medal in 3rd Asian Air Gun Championship in Doha. However, Mampi’s effort would not be considered as a world record since the nationals and selection trials are not taken into account by the International Shooting Sports Federation. This 15 year old talented Shooter has a bright future waiting for her and she can be one of India’s best medal prospect in the next Olympics.

2. TEJAS KARLE (SHOOTING)

Tejas Karle, a 17 year old shooter from Panwel, Maharashtra, is also one of India’s best promising youngsters in Shooting. Karle, who currently trains at Lakshya Shooting Club at the Karnala Sports Academy premises in Panvel under the watchful eyes of Olympian shooter Suma Shirur, is also the World no. 2nd among juniors in the 10m air rifle category. He recently shot a Personal Best pf 591/600 at the International Junior Competition in Rifle-Pistol-Shotgun at Suhl in Germany which was very important for Indian team to win the Bronze medal.

3. SUMIT NAGAL (TENNIS)

Sumit Nagal is India’s one of the best rising and promising stars in Tennis. In Dec 2012 Nagal won the U-14 American Cup tennis championship at Miccosukee Tennis Club in Florida. He defeated Canada’s top ranked junior player David Volfson 1-6 6-1 10-6 in the final. Some top players like Fernando Gonzalez (1994), Marcos Baghdatis (1999), Andy Murray (2000), Novak Djokovic (2001) have won this tournament in the past. One of India’s top doubles players, Mahesh Bhupati, has also picked Sumit as the future of Indian tennis.

“Nagal is the brightest young talent I’ve seen. At his age (14) I did not even think of winning a U-18 title,” Bhupathi said. Nagal, incidentally, received hundred per cent sponsorship from Bhupathi. In the recently concluded U.S. Open Nagal made it to the main draw in the Junior’s category after defeating much higher ranked players in the Qualifying rounds. He however lost to the 8th seed Kaichi Uchida of Japan by 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round.

4. P.V SINDHU (BADMINTON)

P.V Sindhu or Pusrala Venkata Sindhu is now a well known name in the World of Badminton. Just at the age of 17 she is now the World no. 25 in Women’s Singles category. Sindhu, who currently trains at the Gopichand’s Badminton Academy in Hyderabad, is also the current Asian Youth Under 19 Champion. She also won the Under-19 National Juniors in 2010 where incredibly she did not drop even a single set. The fact that she reports on time at the coaching camps daily, travelling a distance of 56 km from her residence, is perhaps a reflection of her willingness to complete her desire to be a good badminton player with the required hard work and commitment.

5. PINKY JANGRA (BOXING)

Pinky Jangra, a 21 year old Boxer from Haryana, who created a flutter by defeating five-time world champion M C Mary Kom two years ago, also reached the Quarterfinals in the 7th AIBA World Women Boxing Championships by defeating top boxers at Qinhuangdao, China in May 2012. Pinky has also defeated Senior National champion and current Asian championship Gold medallist L. Sarita Devi a year ago. In the 4th round of 7th AIBA World Women Boxing Championship, Pinky Jangra destroyed much experienced Mirela Barudzic of Serbia by by Referee Stopping Contest (RSC) in the 4th round. It was indeed a treat to watch Pinky handing out a copybook boxing lesson to her much taller opponent by delivering clean hard blows to the face and body and at the same time keeping her guard in place all the time. She really is a champion Boxer and is India’s one of the best prospects in Women’s Boxing in the future.

6. BABA APARAJITH (CRICKET)

This 18 year old talented cricketer played a significant role in India U-19 World Cup triumph. Baba Aparajith, who came into limelight during the under-19 quadrangular series played at Visakhapatnam in October 2011, took 11 wickets and made 367 runs in the recently concluded U-19 World Cup. In the quadrangular Series at Visakhapatnam, he took 22 wickets in 7 matches, with a best of 5/35 against Sri Lanka on 5th October 2011. He also made 130 runs with a best of 48 not out against Australia U-19 team, thus proving excellent with the bat too. Right on his debut U-19 match, he surprised everyone with an outstanding bowling spell of 5/38 against the Aussies, thus starting his career with a bang. Baba Aparajith, along with his brother, joined the cricketing academy at the young age of seven and has been dreaming of playing for his country ever since.

7. INDU CHAUDHARY (WRESTLING)

Indu Chaudhary, an 20 year old Wrestler, is surely the future of Women’s Wrestling in India. Indu, who recently won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships held in Pattaya, Thailand, has already won the gold Medal in the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship 2012 at Almaty, Kazakhstan in June. In the Junior World Championship Indu defeated much higher ranked opponents in her way to get the Podium finish.

8. ALWYN GEORGE (FOOTBALL)

Alwyn George, the 20 year old Indian Footballer who plays for Pailan Arrows in the I-League, is one of the best future prospects for India in Football. Alwyn was called for India U-23 team in June 2012 for the 2013 AFC U-22 Asian Cup Qualifiers held from 23 June 2012. He played his first game for under-23 team against Lebanon on 23 June 2012 in the opening group match of AFC U-22 qualification. India U23 won the match 5–2 with Alwyn scoring twice.

He then scored the only goal for India U23 during the second match AFC U-22 qualification against Iraq U-23 on 25 June 2012 as India U23 lost 1–2. In his Arrows debut against Dempo he was awarded the man-of-the match award for the splendid skills he exhibited during the match. The biggest strengths of Alwyn are his abilities to hold possession and make space for others. Alwyn likes to run with the ball and also has an eye for the goal, a rare ability in Indian midfielders. Let’s hope this young and extremely talented footballer makes the bright future in the game.

9. DRONAVALLI HARIKA (CHESS)

Dronavalli Harika, who became the second Indian Women after Koneru Humpy to earn the rare feat of achieving Grandmaster title, is the World Youth Champion in the categories of U-14 and U-18. In 2006 at the age of 15 she became the Commonwealth Women Champion. At the age of 16 she won the Arjuna Award and she has also won the Bronze Medal in 2010 Asian Games in Woman’s individual rapid event. She also reached quarterfinal stage of Women World Chess Championships in 2010 which is a big achievement. She created history when she became the youngest player ever to get the Women’s International Masters Title in 2003.

10. GAGAN ULLALMATH (SWIMMING)

Gagan Ullalmath, who was the only Swimmer to represent India at the London Olympics, is the upcoming and the most promising Indian Swimmer. However he finished last in the seven-men heat number one with 16:31.14 secs in men’s 1,500m freestyle at the London Olympics but still his caliber is a lot more and among the swimmers of his age group he is one of the best. The 20-year-old from Bangalore had qualified for the Olympics under FINA’s strange “universality” clause. He won the silver at the Asian age group championship in Jakarta last year with a personal best timing of 15:59.33.
