The Council of Europe's convention on an integrated safety, security and service approach at football matches and other sports events will be signed by some 40 countries on July 3 in France, a Russian sports official said on Monday.

"According to our information about 40 countries are expected to sign the Convention on July 3 in Saint-Denis during the quarterfinal stage of the 2016 Euro Cup in France," Irina Andreyeva, a deputy director of the law department with the Russian sports ministry, said.

"Russia is among the leading countries urging the signing and ratification of the Convention," she said adding that the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers approved the Convention on May 4.

According to the Council of Europe, "The purpose of the Convention is to ensure that football and other sports events provide a safe, secure and welcoming environment for all individuals through the implementation of an integrated approach on safety, security and service at sports events by a plurality of actors working in a partnership amid an ethos of co-operation".
