Video: Fans boo Real Madrid President Florentino Perez at Iker Casillas' farewell

Iker Casillas officially bid farewell to Real Madrid today

After Iker Casillas tearfully bid farewell to Real Madrid after spending 25 years at the club, the Madrid-outfit tried to make amends by organising a farewell event for him at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, the fans that did turn up at the event booed club President Florentino Perez, in addition to making their support known for Casillas.

The fans were very clearly angry at Perez, both for their legendary goalkeeper Casillas’s departure, and the fact that Sergio Ramos has repeatedly been linked with a move away from the club. Chants directed at the President included, “Florentino, resign!” and “Ramos is not for sale,” the latter clearly a message to both the hierarchy and Manchester United that they will not let Ramos leave.

The fans were also very appreciative of Iker Casillas’s service to the club and had warm applause for him. The former club captain, who had started crying at last night’s press conference when he announced his departure, was calm, and acknowledged the fans.

Speaking to the fans, he said, “This one really is the last one, eh,” before going on to say, “As we were saying, if there has been any discrepancy, I am sorry. We’ll remember the good moments,” as quoted by the Guardian.

This is what Perez had to say, “Iker is leaving because he wanted to, and we can only respect that wish because he earned that right. No one asked him to leave. A few days ago he got an offer from Porto and he asked us to consider it. We did that. He has earned the right for the club to make an effort on his behalf, ” as reported by the Guardian.

“Iker wanted an extremely austere, simple goodbye and we accepted that even though we didn’t want it,” Perez was said to be claiming, according to the Guardian. He also added that the club were working on a friendly against Porto to be played “as soon as possible.”

Club legend Casillas will now move to Porto, after making the Real Madrid goalkeeping jersey his own over the course of the last 15 years. His first match for his new club could be their friendly match against Real Madrid.
