'FU** me' - AFC GM in disarray after Chiefs land speedy Xavier Worthy to boost Patrick Mahomes' offense

NFL: Combine
Xavier Worthy was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs at the NFL Draft 2024

The NFL Draft 2024 in Detroit left the front office officials and fans surprised with a handful of strange calls on the night. Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was picked up by the Atlanta Falcons, who signed veteran gunslinger Kirk Cousins to a four-year $180 million deal in March.

This move raised a few eyebrows, but the one that caught everyone’s attention was the Kansas City Chiefs swooping in for Xavier Worthy with the No. 28 pick in the draft.

The Buffalo Bills made a shocking trade with the reigning Super Bowl champions Chiefs at the end of the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, sliding back four spots in the deal.

The Chiefs acted quickly for the nimble-footed Texas wideout Worthy, who clocked in a record 4.22, 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in March. Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, one AFC general manager vented his frustration over the move and said: “FU** me.”

NFL Draft 2024: Patrick Mahomes gets another solid offensive weapon in Xavier Worthy

According to Sportskeeda’s NFL Draft expert Tony Pauline, Worthy ran great routes and made exceptional catches at the Combine in March. The explosive receiver met with a host of NFL teams after showcasing his athleticism in front of general managers and scouts.

At Texas, Worthy surpassed 1,000 receiving yards on 75 receptions and five receiving touchdowns during his senior season. The 20-year-old is slated to impact the Chiefs’ offense led by Patrick Mahomes immediately. The lanky wideout has commendable ball-tracking ability and will provide multiple options for Mahomes via unique routes.

Kadarius Toney started as WR1 for Kansas but his indifferent form forced him to the bench, leaving tight end Travis Kelce with most of the offensive push.

Worthy addressed Chiefs rumors earlier this month and said he would thrive in the two-time defending Super Bowl champions’ setup.

“In a perfect world, I definitely would want to go to the Chiefs. Just the way Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs improvise and use you. They had Tyreek Hill. The way they used him, I feel like that would be a perfect fit for me,” Worthy told USA Today.

The Chiefs were reportedly concerned about the ongoing Rashee Rice situation, so making a move for Worthy was worth it. With Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown's addition to the roster earlier in the offseason, Worthy could benefit from a great wide receiver room and transition into an all-around weapon.
