In the 2019 NBA Draft, his basketball dreams became a reality as he was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the eighth overall pick.

With a vertical jump of 34.5 inches, Hayes has captured the imagination of NBA fans. As of April 21, 2025, he is playing his sixth NBA season and has appeared in 367 games, averaging 6.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.

Jaxson Hayes played one college basketball season at the University of Texas at Austin for the Texas Longhorns men's basketball team. As a freshman, he averaged 10.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while boasting a tremendous 72.8% shooting accuracy from the field. One of his standout performances came in a game against TCU, where he recorded a career-high 19 points, along with seven rebounds, two steals, and a block.

Unfortunately, Hayes suffered a left knee injury in a game against Kansas in the Big 12 tournament, which halted his collegiate season. Despite the setback, his performances throughout the season earned him the honor of being named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year. Following his standout freshman campaign, Hayes decided to declare for the NBA draft on April 11, 2019, foregoing his remaining three years of eligibility to pursue a career at the professional level.

Jaxson Hayes attended Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, under head coach Carl Kremer. As a senior, he averaged 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocks per game and led his school team to a 27-3 record and the Division I state title. By the end of his school career, he was ranked as the No. 89 overall prospect in the nation by ESPN.
