John Collins: A Brief Biography

Born on September 23, 1997, John Martin Collins III is a professional basketball player hailing from the United States. In the 2017 NBA draft, John was picked as the 19th overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks and currently plays for this team. Before joining the NBA, John joined the Wake Forest Demon Deacons team to play college basketball.


John Collins Early Life

John Collins Jr. and Lyria Rissing-Collins, originally from the U.S. Virgin Islands, welcomed their son John Collins into the world in Layton, Utah. His parents have military backgrounds, with his father serving in the Navy and his mother in the Air Force. As a teenager, John developed his soccer expertise through frequent games played on the military bases where his mother was stationed.

Due to his family’s military career, John Collins spent much of his youth living in a variety of different locations like the Virgin Islands, Guam and Turkey.


John Collins Education

John enrolled at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he played basketball for his high school. After completing his senior year of high school, he was regarded as the Florida Class 4A Player of the Year during the 2014-15 season. He was also honoured with the Player of the Year title by various esteemed sources, such as Palm Beach Post, the Sun Sentinel and the Gatorade (Palm Beach).

After completing High School, John attended Wake Forest University, signing the letter of Intent on November 13, 2014. He participated in 31 games with his college team in his first year. John tallied 27 points and seven rebounds in a match against the Miami Heat on January 18, 2017. A few days later, he was recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) player of the week.

In his sophomore year, his college basketball team was led by him and scored 19.2 points per game. His outstanding performance throughout the year earned him the ACC Most Improved Player title and a spot on the first-team-all-ACC. After two seasons in college, John declared for the 2017 NBA draft and was selected by the Atlanta Hawks as the 19th overall pick on June 22, 2017.

On July 1, 2017, John signed a rookie deal with the Atlanta Hawks. He participated in the 2017 NBA Summer League and earned a spot on the All-Summer League First Team with impressive averages of 15.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in just 23.1 minutes of playtime.

Later, in October 2017, John achieved his first-ever double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in a game that ended with a 116-104 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. He scored his career-high 21 points in a 96-85 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on November 20. Late in November, John suffered from a shoulder injury during a match against the Cleveland Cavaliers, so he missed six games.

In May 2018, John Collins was selected in the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. He finished his rookie season averaging 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds. Next Year, John put up an impressive 35 points in a victory over the Chicago Bulls and recorded a career-high 25 rebounds in his next game with the Indiana Pacers. The NBA suspended John Collins on November 5, 2019, after he violated the anti-drug policy and tested positive for Pralmorelin, a growth hormone, so he had to take a break from the matches.

He returned to the court on December 23, 2019, and recorded a double-double grabbing 27 points in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. John participated in many matches during the 2019-20 season against distinct teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Hornets.

On August 6, 2021, John Collins signed a five-year contract with the Atlanta Hawks worth $125 million. Recently, John played a match against the Indiana Pacers on January 13, 2023, and recorded a 113-111 win over them.
