The General Managers in the NBA are responsible for hiring and firing the coaching staff, recruiting and negotiating contracts with the players according to the team’s budget and supervising the operations of the support staff. The best general manager receives an Executive of the year award in the NBA every year.


There are many degrees that qualify to be selected as the general manager, however, it is recommended to have a bachelor's degree in sport management that covers ethical, social, lawful and ethical aspects of the game and good knowledge of the sport. It is not mentioned as to what salary GMs get, but according to an estimate, general managers received a sum of $1 million to $6 million depending on the team, experience, and accomplishments of the coach.


Red Auerbach is considered the best NBA general manager as he helped his team, the Boston Celtics, win 15 titles during his NBA tenure, eight of which were consecutive title wins from 1959-66. Bobby Webster is the youngest general manager at the age of 32. He is the general manager of the Toronto Raptors. Nancy Leonard became the first and only female general manager in NBA history.
