Nigeria is the only African team to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo. With former NBA coach Mike Brown as their head coach, Nigeria will compete in Group B alongside Australia, Germany and Italy. Nigeria has eight NBA players, the most after the USA, on their roster and they became the first African nation to beat the US, who were playing the first of five tune-up games before Tokyo. The D’Tigers have their first game of the group phase against Australia on July 25.
It has been a remarkable rise for the West African nation, struggling with a crippled domestic league following a protracted leadership crisis, as they have turned to overseas-born players and a strong community of diaspora players based in the United States. In 2015, they achieved continental success after winning the African Basketball Championship. No African nation has ever won an Olympic basketball medal, and the Nigerians are all set to compete hard for a medal.
