Tyronn Jamar Lue grew up as a basketball-obsessed kid alongside four siblings in the sparsely populated city of Mexico, Missouri. Lue attended Raytown Senior High School where he developed his game, becoming one of the best players on the Raytown Senior High men’s team.

After finding initial success as a young basketball athlete in High School, Lue joined the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1995. Playing in his freshman season, Lue didn’t disappoint as he put up 8.5 points, three rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game; decent numbers for a six feet tall Point guard.

Entering his sophomore year, Lue impressed with his drastically improved game, averaging 18.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.3 steals a game.

In his three years of playing collegiate basketball, Tyronn finished with a career average of 15.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per contest with Tyronn’s junior year being his most splendid display of basketball prowess. For his contributions, he earned back-to-back first-team All-Big 12 and second-team All-Big 12 selections.

Tyronn went on to be the 23rd overall pick in the 1998 draft by the Denver Nuggets before being traded the same night to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Teams Coached by Tyronn Lue

Tyronn Lue has served as a coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Boston Celtics. Lue began as an assistant coach before earning the head coach position later on.

As Assistant Coach

After retiring from active competition in 2009, Lue was named director of Basketball development and joined the Boston Celtics coaching staff headed by Doc Rivers.

Serving two seasons as the assistant coach, Lue helped the team to two consecutive trips to the playoffs which included the 2012 Eastern conference finals where the Celtics lost the closely contested series to the Lebron-led Miami Heat.

In 2013, Lue joined Doc Rivers again in the Los Angeles Clippers coaching staff and led the team to an excellent 57-25 regular season record. However, the Clippers fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Western Conference semifinals four games to two.

Lue’s next and thus far his last stint as an assistant coach for the Clippers came in the 2019-2020 season under Doc Rivers before he took over as the head coach the following season. The clippers got eliminated in the Western semis to a much better Denver Nuggets team who rallied from a 3-1 deficit to soundly defeat the clippers and progress into the WC finals.

As Head Coach

Lue served as assistant head coach for the 2014-15 season in which the Cavaliers reached their second-ever NBA finals.

Lue assumed his duties as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers half-way into the 2015-16 season. Ty Lue led the Cavaliers past Pistons and Hawks in the first and second round four to nothing (4-0) before losing two games to the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference finals. The Cavaliers did defeat the Raptors 4-2 to enter the 2016 NBA finals.

The Cavs fought tooth and nail to prevail over the Golden State Warriors and win their first NBA Championship.

Tyronn Lue took over the reins as head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers in 2021, helping the team reach the playoffs in two out of three seasons.
