UCLA (2003)

Kyle Shanahan served one year as a graduate assistant under Karl Dorrell for UCLA.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2004 - 2005)

Kyle Shanahan's first stint as a coach in the NFL came in 2004. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired him as an offensive quality control coach under head coach Jon Gruden.

Houston Texans (2006 - 2009)

Shanahan became the youngest positional coach in 2006 when Gary Kubiak hired him as the wide receivers coach for the Texans. He got promoted twice in the next two years as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator respectively. Shanahan became the youngest coordinator in the league at the time. He held the OC position until 2009.

Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders) (2010 - 2013)

Shanahan joined Washington in 2010 to serve as an offensive coordinator under his father Mike Shanahan. However, Mike’s hiring of Shanahan as the OC of the team was seen by many as an act of nepotism. The 4-year tenure at Washington was one to forget for Shanahan as the team had only 1 winning season in 4 years under that regime.

Cleveland Browns (2014)

Kyle Shanahan handled offensive coordinator duties for 1 year before resigning due to friction with head coach Mike Pettine.

Atlanta Falcons (2015 - 2016)

Shanahan’s best work as an OC came in his second year with the Falcons. Atlanta’s offense under Shanahan’s tutelage became the highest-scoring offense in the league in 2016. Not only did the team reach the Super Bowl that year, but Matt Ryan, Falcons QB at the time won the MVP award while Shanahan was named NFL Assistant Coach of the Year.

San Francisco 49ers (2017 - Present)

Shanahan was hired as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers on February 6, 2017. After winning just 10 games in his first two seasons, Shanahan took the 49ers to the Super Bowl in his third year with the team. Since then, the 49ers have become a perennial Super Bowl contender under Kyle Shanahan.

In his 7 seasons with the team (by the end of the 2023 season), a younger Shanahan has led the 49ers to three divisional titles, four NFC Championship Games, and two Super Bowl appearances. However, both trips to the Super Bowl have resulted in heartbreak for the coach and the team as they have come back empty-handed on both occasions against Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs. By the end of 2023, Kyle Shanahan has a 64-51 record in the regular season while going 8-4 in the postseason.
