The San Francisco 49ers may want to forget their past season as they enter 2025. After the disastrous 2024, Kyle Shanahan and co. would be eager to find their previous mojo and get back to perennial Super Bowl contender status. San Francisco also solved the looming Brock Purdy contract situation before it escalated any further by inking him to a 5-year extension.

However, all the positives stopped right there for the 5-time Super Bowl champions as their terrible offseason has only created a further gap between them and last year’s divisional winners, the Los Angeles Rams. 49ers faithful would be hoping that offensive wizard Kyle Shanahan would once again get the best out of the team and make them punch above their weight.

What is the San Francisco 49ers' depth chart for 2025-26?

The Niners had an underwhelming free agency, to put it in a good way. While the team lost some major pieces in FA, like linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga to Denver, they were unable to fill those voids in March. They will also be without a veteran presence in defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, cornerback Charvarius Ward, and dual-threat wide receiver Deebo Samuel (traded). San Fran did not hand out a single long-term contract to any free agents and did most of the damage during the draft.

The 49ers went all in on defense by picking defensive players with their first five picks in the draft. After shoring up at the line of scrimmage in the first two rounds by taking Mykel Williams (Edge) and Alfred Collins (DT), Red and Gold opted for linebacker Nick Martin and cornerback Upton Stout in the third round.
