Josh Allen is currently the starting quarterback for the NFL team Buffalo Bills. Allen became the highest-drafted player from the University of Wyoming after he was picked overall 7th in the 1st Round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Allen has set franchise passing records for the Bills and led them to their first Playoff appearance since 1995.


Josh Allen’s Early Life and Background


Allen was born in Firebaugh, California and grew up on a 3000-acre cotton farm. He attended high school at Firebaugh but never attracted much interest from colleges or offered any scholarships from any NCAA Division I program.


Allen attended Reedley College (a junior college) for a year. He had a phenomenal season as a Reddley player. He received an offer from Wyoming and joined them. Allen became a starter for Wyoming after spending most of the first season injured. Allen contemplated declaring for the 2017 NFL draft, but upon his coach’s and family’s advice, he decided to stay in school one more year as that would help improve his long-term NFL prospects. He threw for a total of 5066 passing yards and made 44 touchdown passes for Wyoming.

Allen was a highly considered quarterback prospect of the 2018 NFL Draft. He was the overall pick number 7 in the First Round as the Buffalo Bills drafted him. He was the third quarterback to be drafted in the 2018 NFL Draft. Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold were the two quarterbacks drafted before him. Other prominent players from the 2018 draft include running back Saquan Barkley, defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick and quarterback Lamar Jackson.


Josh Allen’s NFL Journey


Josh Allen has been a very important part of the Buffalo Bills team ever since he got drafted. On the day of his draft, Allen faced criticism and backlash for racial and homophobic slurs he made in High School. Allen apologised for his past behaviour stating he was ‘young and dumb’.


Allen had a decent rookie season and started 11 games for the Bills. By Week 14 of his rookie season, Allen had become became the first quarterback in NFL history with at least 95 yards rushing in a three-week span, accumulating 335 yards. Josh Allen was named the team captain for the Bills in his second season (2019). He helped the Bills break their Playoff drought by qualifying for the 2019-20 NFL Playoffs. Allen had a strong regular season in 2020 and had a career-high passer rate of 107.2 that season. He also threw a career-high of 37 touchdown passes in the regular season. The Bills made it to the Conference Championship that year but lost out to the Kansas City Chiefs.


The Bills exercised the 5th year option on Allen’s rookie contract in 2021. He then signed a six-year contract extension worth around $258 million with a guarantee of $150 million. Allen finished the 2021 season with a career-high of 409 pass completions and helped the Bills reach the NFL Playoffs for a third consecutive year. They lost the Divisional Round to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Allen has set several Bills franchise records since his rookie season. He has the most rushing yards (135) by a Bills quarterback in a single game along with the most rushing touchdowns (9) in a season. Allen made it to one Pro-Bowl (2020) and was also awarded the PWFA Most Improved Player of the Year (2020) for his stellar season with the Bills. As of 2021, he is ranked 10th on the NFL Top 100 list. The Bills might not have made it past the Divisional round in the 2021-22 Playoffs but Josh Allen’s passer rating of 149 is the highest ever in a single postseason.
