Josh Allen College Career
Reedley College
Allen spent only one season with Reedley College, which is a junior college, and in that one season alone he has performed phenomenally aiding Reedley's performance in the national scenario. However, Allen only became the team's starter after he ran four touchdowns after coming off the bench in the fourth game in 2014. For the rest of the season, he scored 25 touchdowns with only 4 interceptions.
Allen’s Reedley coaches thought he would receive many FBS scholarship offers but in spite of Allen sending out mass emails to every head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and quarterback coach in FBS, he received responses from only a small number of schools. Apparently only Eastern Michigan and Wyoming offered him a scholarship which was quite unexpected.
University of Wyoming
As it would seem, luck was still wasn’t on Allen’s side as initially, Wyoming's coaches visited Reedley to scout another potential transfer. However, former Fresno State assistant Dave Brown, who had since become part of the inaugural staff of new Cowboys head coach Craig Bohl, and was familiar with Allen, urged offensive coordinator Brent Vigen to recruit him. Vigen took up Brown on his request and began analyzing Allen. He noticed a lot of similarities between Allen and Carson Wentz. Wentz was a quarterback he had recruited in 2010 while he was at North Dakota State, in the same role. Wentz later went on to become the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. Allen and Wentz shared their small-town, multi-sport, and late-blooming background, and were similar in size too. Finally, he received an offer from Wyoming and enrolled there prior to the 2015 season.
Allen played in two games and made one start in his first year at Wyoming. Unfortunately, he broke his collarbone which ended his season and thus in his first career start he could attempt only four passes. He qualified for a medical redshirt as the injury occurred early in the season. Allen became Wyoming's starter only after returning from the injury in 2016. He threw for over 3,200 yards and 28 touchdowns that year. Allen contemplated declaring for the 2017 NFL draft, but upon his coach’s and family’s advice, he decided to stay in school one more year as that would help improve his long-term NFL prospects. Reports claim that he also went to Wentz to seek some advice. Wentz told him that he would have many NFL veterans depending on him to "win games and help secure their jobs." Allen threw for 1,812 yards, 16 touchdowns, and six interceptions as he eventually remained at Wyoming in 2017.
