What Happened Between Stefanos Tsitsipas and His Mother?

Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently one of the best players on the ATP tour. A big part of the Greek phenom's success, is his family. Tsitsipas was born in Athens, Greece, on August 12, 1998. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 3 in August 2021. He has won 11 ATP singles titles till date, including one Nitto ATP Finals and three Masters 1000 Monte Carlo titles. He also won the 2024 Laver Cup with Team Europe.

A player to beat in any draw, Stefanos Tsitsipas won his 11th ATP title in April 2024, at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he defeated Casper Ruud in straight sets in the final. Additionally, he has played two major finals till date, the 2021 French Open, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in five sets, and the 2023 Australian Open, losing to Djokovic again. He is currently in a relationship with Spanish tennis star Paula Badosa.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is an all-court player whose playing style can be described as an aggressive baseliner. His forehand is considered one of the best on the tour and his favorite surface is grass. According to the ATP website, he has won over $31.7 million in prize money till date.

What Happened Between Stefanos Tsitsipas and His Mother

During his 2023 Italian Open semifinal against Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas found himself involved in a controversy. According to reports, he asked his mother, Julia Apostoli, to leave the stadium for speaking in Russian during the match. After losing the first set, Tsitsipas was animated at his box, and his mother soon got up and sat on a different seat. Tsitsipas was furious at his mother Julia for speaking in Russian, and asked her to leave the stadium. He did not want his mother to give him instructions in Russian as he was playing a Russian opponent.

Julia Apostoli, Tsitsipas’ mother, was a former professional tennis player who played for both the Soviet Union and Greece. His father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, was also a former tennis player. Tsitsipas is now primarily coached by his father, and former world No. 8 and two-time major finalist Mark Philippoussis.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Parents

Stefanos Tsitsipas' parents are Apostolos Tsitsipas and Julia Apostoli. They come from a tennis background, having met when Apostolos was officiating a tournament where Julia was playing. In fact, Tsitsipas' mother was his first coach, before his father took over.

Stefanos Tsitsipas began playing tennis at the age of 3, and was encouraged by his parents to take it up professionally. He has always had a close equation with them, and they have remained a constant in his player's box throughout his career. Back in 2015, Tsitsipas nearly drowned while swimming, but was saved by his father Apostolos; the Greek sensation later clarified that the incident changed his life. He also has three siblings: Petros, Pavlos, and Elisavet Tsitsipas.
