Andy Murray and Yannick Hanfmann preview

Germany's Yannick Hanfmann is slated to face multiple grand slam winner Andy Murray in the opening round clash at the 2024 Geneva Open. Hanfmann has had an unremarkable season so far. He bowed out of the Australian Open in the first round, losing to Gael Monfils, but after the disappointment at Melbourne Park, Hanfmann performed better in the Sunshine Double.

At Indian Wells, the German was defeated by Tallon Griekspoor in the second round. At the Miami Open, he managed to progress to the third round where he lost to eventual runner-up Grigor Dimitrov.

In the clay-court season so far, the German has had a record of 2 wins and 4 losses. This includes first-round exits at Monte-Carlo and Madrid. In the recently concluded Italian Open, Hanfmann won his first match against Jakub Mensik. He lost the next round against Alejandro Tabilo.

Andy Murray, however, on quite the other hand, has had a downright torrid season in 2024. The Brit has been maligned by injuries that made him skip or miss vital tournaments. He lost to Thomas Etcheverry in the first round of the Australian Open. At both Indian Wells and Miami, Murray managed to win his first matches but faltered in the second rounds at the hands of Andrey Rublev and Tomas Machac respectively.

An ankle injury compelled the Brit to sit out all the clay-court tournaments of the season so far. Murray played at a challenger in Bordeaux where he lost to Gregoire Barrere. He received a wild card to play at Geneva and will attempt to build towards a succesful French Open campaign.

Andy Murray vs Yannick Hanfmann prediction

Hanfmann has been regularly playing on the ATP tour and has actively participated in all the preceding clay-court tournaments, and therefore has had considerable practice of playing on the surface.

Murray is coming back from an ankle injury that sidelined him for some months on the tour. The recent convalescence might hamper the Brit's movement on the red dirt. His first important tournament on clay this season, Murray also may take some time to get settled on the surface. However, the veteran's Masters 1000 titles on the surface, along with him having reached the 2016 French Open final, should help the Brit's performance in this match.

Hanfmann has to rely on serving very strongly throughout the match as Murray has had a great record while returning from the baseline. The Brit is also adept at long rallies and forcing his opponents to make a mistake by making them play an extra shot.

Pick - Murray to win in three sets.
