Fiorente wins at 2013 Melbourne Cup

Melbourne, Nov 5 (IANS) Race horse Fiorente, trained by Australian lady trainer Gai Waterhouse, on Tuesday emerged victorious in the 2013 Emirates Melbourne Cup at the Flemington racecourse here.

The horse, which ranked second in last year’s race, was ridden by Damien Oliver and won from Red Cadeaux in second and Mount Athos in third. Twenty-four horses took part in this year’s competition, with nine of them being trained overseas, reports Xinhua.

At least 100,000 fans flocked to the Flemington racecourse and 700 million people in around 120 countries were estimated to have watched the race on television.

Melbourne Cup Day is Australia’s best-known horse-racing event and is held on the first Tuesday of November every year.

The massive national event is popularly dubbed as “the race that stops a nation”. It is an annual public holiday in the state of Victoria and sees millions gamble on the winner.
