Carragher urges Arsenal's Mesut Ozil to lead the charge for the Premier League title

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are partly responsible for Arsenal’s success this season

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil to lead the charge in the club’s title challenge this season, as per the reports on Daily Mirror. The Gunners have failed to win the Premier League for over a decade and Carragher has admitted Arsene Wenger’s men will not get a better chance to win the title this season.

The North London club are currently level on points with rivals Manchester City at the top of the domestic league table after 12 games with just five goals separating the two sides. Much of Arsenal’s success this season has been partly because of Alexis Sanchez’s ruthlessness in front of goal and Mesut Ozil’s creativity upfront. On the other hand, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott have also eased off Sanchez’s goalscoring burden in rough patches.

The German international is the highest assist maker in the Premier League this season with 9 assists this term and 2 goals in all competition. Ozil had endured two difficult seasons at Emirates Stadium ever since he arrived from Real Madrid in 2013, but this season, the World Cup winner looks to be back to his best and has stepped up for the Gunners, bringing him back in contention for ‘Europe’s best playmaker’ award.

The reigning English champions are on a poor run of form after their dismal start to the season while Manchester United have been struggling in front of goal and City have been dealt with injury blows to a number of key players including Sergio Aguero.

Ten of their senior players have been hit with injuries in the past weeks. However, Carragher, who’s now a pundit with Sky, believes Wenger’s men are in the best position to win the league title this season, considering the fact that they are out of the Capital One Cup and could be shown the Champions League exit door soon.

“All their rivals have issues or distractions and this is why [Arsene] Wenger has to capitalise,” wrote Carragher in his column.

“Next season, for instance, Chelsea will not be as bad as they are now. United will, inevitably, invest another £100million next summer and it is only a matter of time before the weight of their spending carries them back to winning silverware.”

“Arsenal have to exploit the glimmer of light in front of them. They have been the best team in 2015, taking 67 points from their 30 Premier League matches, but being the best from January to December means nothing.”
