Cristiano Ronaldo's life is a bit of a nightmare, says documentary producer

The Portuegese star does not regret that the film shows ‘too much’ about him

James Gay-Rees, producer of a documentary on football star Cristiano Ronaldo’s life said CR7 leads a lonely life. Gay-Rees was also involved with the film ‘Senna’, based on the Brazilian Formula 1 driver and also helped the team that recently made a documentary on Amy Winehouse’s life.

Talking about the Real Madrid player, James said, “He’s got a very small group of friends and he surrounds himself with his family. I think the level of sacrifice required to operate at that level is beyond most of our understanding.”

The way 30-year-old Ronaldo deals with his stardom is what surprised this documentary’s producer the most. “It requires a huge amount of dedication and sacrifice. He has an idea, he wants a legacy, he wants to go down as one of the greatest players of all time. It’s a pretty brutal, lonely lifestyle.”

Talking about how the Portuegese star is not like how people believes him to be Gay-Rees added, “I think we all imagined that he just swans around making a lot of money and being Cristiano Ronaldo, but there’s a lot of sacrifice [that goes] into that in order to make that happen.”

The producer also said how disciplined the footballer’s life is. “I think one of the most surprising things is that it’s not easy being a global superstar. It’s a bit of a nightmare. I mean, his life is just so disciplined, it’s so regimented. He trains so hard, he’s so driven it’s unreal.” He believes the best thing about this film is the fact that it explains why the star is so driven.

James also said that people think they know everything about this ‘amazing footballer’ but in reality they have no clue. “He’s probably one of the most famous people in the world. It was a great opportunity to spend a year with somebody that brilliant and that famous and really get to the hub of what makes him tick,” he added.

According to what Gay-Rees told Newsbeat, Ronaldo has watched the film a couple of times and except “a few comments”, he is very happy with it. The documentary film, ‘Ronaldo’ was in cinemas for one night only, that of November 9. However, it is available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download.
