Manchester United manager has claimed that he expects the club to offer Robin van Persie a new contract after rumours that he may leave the club.

The Dutchman has expressed his displeasure a couple of times to the press in recent weeks, suggesting that he may be looking for a way out of the club after a dismal season of results under David Moyes.

However, the Dutchman squashed any talk of leaving with a statement on Thursday expressing his desire to stay and fight for United.

He said that he would like to extend his contract beyond 2016 which is when his current deal expires.

“It’s nice of Robin (to say he is happy to stay),” the United manager said. “He is happy here and we are very pleased about that.

“He has a couple of years to go on his contract and I am sure that (an extension) is something the board will look at.”

Van Persie has scored 11 goals in the Premier League this season and remains a constant threat for United but he seems unhappy with the style of football used by David Moyes and, while he passes into his thirties, he won’t be willing to miss out on the Champions League for much longer than one season.

Van Persie has created just 16 chances this season, less than Juan Mata (17) who only signed in January.
