Does Chelsea need a new striker?

“Hazard to Torres….GOAL!! Sublime finish from Torres & yet another assist from Hazard.” These were the words from each and every commentator and also the words moving in the mind of every Chelsea fan since the goal hit the back of the net. Every Chelsea fan must have seen the highlights, if only for that spectacular goal from Torres. And from his performance since the Community Shield till yesterday’s match, everyone would want Torres to get back to his lethal best. But what happened if he gets injured?

I, being a Chelsea fan, am optimistic that this season is the season for Torres to shine, and yes he will definitely shine. The work rate he puts in every match, the runs he make, basically when the referee blows the whistle at the start of a Chelsea match, every fan’s eyes are on Torres. They eagerly want every player from Mata to Hazard; from Ivanovic to Cole and even to Cech, to pass the ball to Torres. They just want their star striker to score. Even Torres knows the importance of the goal and how much it means to him, the team and of course the fans. Our heart beats 1000 times the normal when Torres is on the ball. We all want him,” not to miss the chance”. But no one would want him to get booked or get injured. And I know everyone would agree with me.

What I am trying to point out is that, if Torres gets booked or banned or the worst case, gets injured, can Chelsea cope up the pressure?? I am basically speaking from what I saw. Look what happened to other top team strikers. Aguero got injured in the Southampton match; Rooney in the Fulham match. Both of them are central for their teams and the star performers. But when we look at the bench of both City & United, we find very big names & players who have established themselves as devastating strikers. Tevez, Balotelli, Dzeko, Van Persie, Berbatov, Chicarito, Welbeck – have all represented their countries for they have shown what they are worth. But does Chelsea have any such player to show?

All fans out there can curse me for my points, but we should face the fact, that we cannot depend on Torres for season long. Someone should be there for support. As you all know how much selfish Sturridge is. I am not saying he’s a bad player. He scored 11 goals last season playing on the wings and can do the same when given the centre forward. In my opinion, he’ll be surrounded by defenders who are always trying to attack the strikers. The Premier League is well known for its hard game which involves fierce tussles and tackles. And it has been growing large as each and every time is playing the hard game to grab as many points as possible and it will continue.

My call is that we need to buy another striker as a substitute for Torres. It can be Cavani, Hulk, and Falcao. Every player should understand that it is a team game and we are playing for the team. If this is understood, there wouldn’t be any ego problems existing in the team. Like Torres was benched when Drogba was playing and came and played his part by contributing the most. And I hope this is what every Chelsea fan is thinking.
