England's Youth are not striving hard enough: Campbell

Launch to Mark the FA's 150th Anniversary Year

England’s defeat in the hands of Norway, this weekend, has led Sol Campbell to believe that the quality of the English youth is dwindling.

Even as the FA insists that the English coach Stuart Pearce has done a stellar job, the former Gunner says that the youngsters are not striving hard enough and hence the continuous flop shows.

People are questioning England U21s’ humiliating flop in Israel and Campbell blames the incompetence of the young professionals who think they are first class material, after having played a few first team games.

There are numerous reasons for England’s less than mediocre performance and one of them was FA’s rule of not picking any player who was in the senior team, imposed on Pearce.

Other reasons include the ferocity with which clubs protect their players from being over worked post domestic season and issues such as development of talents and the exposure of those talents against foreign imports.

Stuart Pearce, whose contract ends this month, is set to hold talks with Bernstein in the next couple of weeks to determine his future.

Bernstein has lauded Pearce by saying that his record spanning six years, during which he guided the team to four finals is nothing short of excellent.
