Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the signing of Rickie Lambert from Southampton will prove to be a shrewd acquisition.

Liverpool signed Lambert from Southampton on Monday in a deal worth £4 million, nearly two decades after releasing Lambert as a 15-year-old from the club.

The Southampton striker has played a crucial part in Southampton’s success of recent years, with the south coast side now readying themselves for their third successive Premier League campaign.

The club have been dealt with the blow that both Lambert and manager Mauricio Pochettino have moved for pastures new this summer, however, the owners have spoken of their urge not to sell anymore key men.

Lambert, a boyhood Liverpool fan, has always made it known of his love for the Reds and former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher admits that signing the former Rochdale and Stockport striker is a good move from Brendan Rodgers.

Carragher told the club’s official website: “I think it’s a very good signing,” he said. “He’s a local boy, a Liverpool fan, and it’s probably been a dream for him.

“There’ll be lots of games with Liverpool being involved in the Champions League, so he’ll play his part and I’m sure he’ll get some goals.”
