Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray has been sacked after three years with the Riverside club.

Mark Venus, the assistant coach will be taking charge of the club temporarily for Friday’s league match against Doncaster. The club website said they “would like to place on record their sincere thanks to Tony Mowbray for all of his substantial efforts, dedication and integrity”.

Middlesbrough have won only one of their last ten matches and are struggling at 16th in the league table. Their only win in the season came against Yeovil and this dismal run of form has put them only four points above the relegation zone.

Mowbray played for ‘Boro in 1982 and was named captain of the side when he was only 23-years-old. He led the team to top flight football in 1988 and rose to club legend by playing 348 games in a nine year spell. He took charge of the team three years ago, but the performance off late proved to be his undoing.
