Chelsea player Mohamed Salah was until a couple of days ago in danger of jeopardising his football career will not have to undergo military service after intervention by the Egyptian Prime Minister.

Popularly called “the Egyptian Messi”, the winger was in danger of having to report for mandatory military service according to Egyptian law but a meeting between Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, the Minister of Higher Education and the Egyptian national manager Shawky Gharib seems to have resolved the situation.

Gharib had earlier described the situation as ‘threatening’ to Egyptian football after the Higher Education Minister had cancelled Salah’s registration with a university thereby cancelling his exemption from military service.

The 22-year-old will no longer have to return to his country and can now travel with Chelsea for their pre-season tour in Austria where they face RZ Pellets first.He scored in the London club’s opening pre-season friendly against Wimbledon FC.

Salah has scored 17 goals in 29 appearances for Egypt and 2 goals and an assist in 11 appearances for Chelsea.
