According to several newpapers in England, Premier League giants Liverpool will swoop for the Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen in the summer.

The defender has made his thoughts known to the North London club, and has confirmed that he will have to consider other options should the Spurs fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season, which now seems increasingly likely.

The Merseyside club on the other hand are sitting pretty in second place in the domestic league with just 10 games to go, and have almost nailed down a top four spot, which will see them play in the most elite compeition in Europe next season.

Taking into account the problems Brendan Rodgers has faced in defence so far, he will splash the cash on a proven center back at the end of the season, and with Champions league to offer, will be able to attract high profile players.

Club vice captain Daniel Agger is odds on to move on come next season, and Kolo Toure has looked shaky at the back, to say the least.

Should Vertonghen be available in the summer, Liverpool are said to be in the driving seat to secure the talented 26-year old. The former Ajax man, who wants to play in the Champions League will surely be attracted by a move to the Anfield.
