Jack Wilshere has said that if Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney were to join Arsenal, it would make the Gunners serious contenders for the Barclays Premier League title next season.

Rooney has been heavily-linked with a move to Arsenal in the past week and it is believed that Arsenal are on the verge of launching a bid of around 20 million pounds for the England international.

Wishere said: “If it [signing Rooney] happens, it would be amazing. He is the type of player who can win you trophies – and just to see his name on the team sheet brings fear to the opposition. We could do with a little more of that.”

He also stressed on fact that Arsenal need to show that they mean business when they get outon field next time.

“You look at the type of players like (Gonzalo) Higuaín we are trying to bring in and you have got to be encouraged”.

On importance of squad depth, he said: “I think we need a few more, not to step right into the team, but to add to the squad. We need our squad to be as deep as United’s and [Manchester] City’s. They can change their back four completely and still win. There is no way United would have won the Premier League trophy with 18 players.”

When asked about not winning a trophy, Wilshere acknowledged the fact that it was sure to be on players’ minds too.

“It is no secret we need to win a trophy. How long has it been now, seven or eight years? The players feel the pressure and we have gotten close a few times like with the Carling Cup a couple of years ago. I think once we win one, others will follow.”

Arsenal have £75m to spend in this summer transfer window while Real Madrid’s Higuain and Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini are also rumoured to be on Arsenal’s wish-list.
