Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Tim Sherwood has been appointed as their new manager following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas.

Sherwood has been given an 18-month contract at the North London club following a round of late-night talks with chairman Daniel Levy. The news will come as a major boost for the former Spurs midfielder after he earlier refused a shorter deal till the end of the current season.

Club chairman Daniel Levy was reported to have met Dutch coach Louis van Gaal in a bid to bring him on-board, but the Dutch FA wouldn’t let van Gaal take the job till after the 2014 World Cup. Spurs were linked with a host of other names including Fabio Capello and Glenn Hoddle but Sherwood’s appointment on Monday night has put all speculation to bed.

Sherwood will take charge of Tottenham as a full-time manager for the first time during the White Hart lane outfit’s Boxing Day fixture against West Bromwich Albion. Spurs will look to resurrect their season after a rather below-par start to the campaign.

Chris Ramsey, Les Ferdinand and Steffen Freund will be part of Tim Sherwood’s backroom staff.
