Video: Independiente relegated for first time in history

South American giants Independiente relegated from the Argentine top-flight for first time in their 108-year history following 1-0 home defeat to San Lorenzo on Saturday.

Independiente made a shaky start against San Lorenzo in one of the most important games in the club’s history.

A defeat would relegate Independiente for the first time in their 108 year existence.

Tensions were high and there was a delay as police had to halt the threat of a pitch invasion.

The seven time Copa Libertadores hopes of avoiding the drop took a huge blow when Angel Correa fired San Lorenzo in to the lead.

Lucas Villalba came close late on but Independiente’s fate was sealed.

San Lorenzo had the chance to double their advantage and Independiente fans knew they were going down.

There was no repeat of the violence that greeted River Plate‘s demise two year’s ago.

Independiente supporters cheered their relegated team off the pitch.
