Why is the Masters at Augusta National called the Masters? Reasoning behind special Golf tournament

The Masters Tournament was introduced in 1934 by Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts. It was originally called the Arnold National Invitational Tournament before being renamed Masters in 1938.

Bobby Jones named it the Arnold National Invitational but Roberts suggested naming it Masters, in a reference to the 'masters of golf.' It was officially called The Masters in 1934-38, but when the media largely reported on the event as The Masters, Jones relented to allow the tournament by the name suggested by Roberts.

The Masters got its name because it's a grand tournament that features the best golfers in the world. It is the master of all golf events.

The Masters takes place every year in the first week of April. Jack Nicklaus won the highest number of Masters in history. Tiger Woods has five green jackets, while Arnold Palmer has won four.

The 2023 edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place from April 6-9 at the permanent home of the tournament, Augusta National Golf Course.
