Tied Test

Cricket

1986 – The second tied Test in the history took place in Madras when Greg Matthews trapped Maninder Singh with the penultimate delivery of the match. In tense last couple of overs Maninder Singh, India’s No. 11 played out Bright’s over, leaving Ravi Shastri on strike for the final over. Shastri took two runs from the second ball but took a disastrous single off the third. Even Though, it meant India could not lose, but it also meant that Matthews had three deliveries at Maninder. Well to India’s despair he needed only two as the match ended in a dramatic tie.

1962 – Birthday of former New Zealand skipper Martin Crowe. Crowe was an imperious stroke-maker, who at his best had the ability to hammer any bowling attack. He represented in 77 Test matches for kiwis scoring 5444 runs at an average of 45.36

1976 - Birthday of Sri Lankan batsman Thilan Samaraweera. Despite playing 81 Test matches for Sri Lanka, he will perhaps always be remembered as a player who took a bullet in the leg during the Lahore terror attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in 2009. Samaraweera made his debut as an off-spinner but later transformed himself to most reliable middle-order batsman scoring 5642 runs at an average of 48.76.

Football

1970 – Emmanuel Petit, France footballer, was born. He played European giants like Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea. He also earned 63 caps for his national team.

2010 – Northampton Town, a fourth-division club, upset Liverpool in the League Cup, beating the Premier League team on penalties 4-2.

Olympics

1983 – Zhu Jianhau of China sets, the then, High Jump record at 7’9 3/4″.

1988 – South Korean coaches attack NZ referee after disputing his decision, Olympic Korean boxer stages a 67 minute sit-in.

Baseball

1968 - Cesar Tovar became the second major league baseball player to play all nine positions in one game.

1969 - Willie Mays hit his 600th career home run.
