Andy Murray jokes about entering politics after tennis career, outgoing Nicola Sturgeon ready to endorse former World No. 1 for Scottish high post

Andy Murray and Nicola Sturgeon were involved in a funny Twitter exchange after the former reacted to the latter's resignation as Scottish minister.

Sturgeon became Scotland's First Minister in November 2014 and was in office for three terms before announcing her resignation on February 15, 2023.

As expected, there were a lot of reactions to the 52-year-old's resignation. Andy Murray took to Twitter to give his two cents on Sturgeon's departure. The former World No. 1 jokingly stated that he was looking to enter politics after retiring from tennis.

"Interesting vacancy. Was looking to get into politics when I finish playing," Andy Murray's tweet read.

Nicola Sturgeon was evidently amused by Murray's tweet as she responded to his tweet in a similarly playful manner.

"I know I said I wouldn’t endorse anyone as my successor, but….," she tweeted.

Nicola Sturgeon heaped praise on Andy Murray following his third-round exit at the Australian Open last month.

"Not to be for @andy_murray today - but in terms of sheer guts, determination, never-say-die sportsmanship, he’s the stand out winner of this competition. What a credit to tennis and sport - and, of course, Scotland. Well done, Andy - we’re all so proud of you," the 52-year-old wrote.

Andy Murray has so far won two out of four matches played on the 2023 ATP Tour. The Scot started his season at the Adelaide International 1 and lost 7-6(3), 6-3 to eventual runner-up Sebastian Korda in the first round.

He then entered the Australian Open and faced 13th seed Matteo Berrettini in the first round. Murray won the first two sets but the Italian took the next two to force the match into a fifth set. The Scot saved a match point before winning the final set via a tiebreaker.

He next faced Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round and the Aussie won the first two sets. However, the 35-year-old staged a brilliant comeback to win 4-6, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-3, 7-5. Murray then lost 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4 to 24th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round.

The Scot is yet to play a match since the Australian Open and recently dropped from 61st to 70th in the ATP rankings. He is next scheduled to compete at the Dubai Tennis Championships, which starts on February 27, having received a wildcard for the ATP 500 event.
