"50-0": Rod Brind'Amour livid as Hurricanes concede five goals in under 30 minutes against Edmonton Oilers

Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour did not hold back during the second-period on-ice interview with Darren Peng. He was livid after the Carolina Hurricanes conceded five goals in approximately 33 minutes of play against the Edmonton Oilers.

Rod Brind'Amour addressed the team's performance, in the first period and start of the second, and said:

"We're on our way to losing 50-0 right now. I've never seen our team play this brutal. At this point, I'm lost for words to be quite honest. We weren't ready to start, that was clear."

The Hurricanes did not start well in the second period either after conceding a goal to Warren Foegele. This added fuel to Brind'Amour's fire:

"Now we're just kinda doing things, not the way do it. This is what you get. At this point, we're probably turning the page."

Ryan McLeod and Mattias Ekholm netted the Oilers' first two goals within 41 seconds of the first period. Zach Hyman then scored two successive goals, taking his tally to 14 this season. The Carolina Hurricanes were trailing 4-0 after the first period.

At 2:49 into the second period, Rod Brind'Amour's Canes conceded their fifth goal of the game. The remainder of the period was scoreless for both teams with Carolina trailing the game by five goals as the game headed into the third period.

Canes captain Jordan Staal got onec back for Carolina. His 7:05 goal past Staurt Skinner was his third of the season. Zach Hyman scored the Oilers' sixth and completed his hattrick, his second of this season, on an assist from Connor McDavid.

Rod Brind'Amour and Jordan Staal's post-game thoughts

After their 6-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, who have now won five straight games, head coach Rod Brind'Amour summed up the game with,

"It was a bad game from start to finish. We didn't have anything going. [When] you get in a hole like that off the bat, that's certainly not how you want to start the game. I haven't seen a game like that out of us, so I'm a little lost for words. Not acceptable, that's for sure.

Canes points leaders in Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis and Martin Necas failed to register a point against Oilers. Holding his top player accountable, Rod Brind'Amour added,

"Our top guys, especially, have got to show up a little more. You see their top guys out there, that's for sure. We've got to be better."

Captain Jordan Staal also weighed in on his team's performance post game. He highlighted Oilers' early start and how recovering from that was extremely difficult for his squad,

"It wasn't pretty, the whole game. Embarrassing, really. [It's a] good thing we play tomorrow, I wouldn't want to sit on that one for too long. They got two goals in the first minute and it's tough to come back [after that] in this league."

Rod Brind'Amour and the Carolina Hurricanes travel to Calgary next to take on the Flames. This will be the first of two scheduled regular season meetings between the two teams.

Hurricanes will be looking to improve their 14-10-1 record and chase New York Rangers who have the top spot in the Metropolitan Division with a 18-5-1 record.
