NBA executive suggests Dejounte Murray as potential successor to Steph Curry on Warriors: Reports

Golden State Warriors v Atlanta Hawks
Will Dejounte Murray be the successor to Steph Curry in Golden State?

According to an NBA executive, Atlanta Hawks' Dejounte Murray is a potential successor to Steph Curry at the Golden State Warriors. Curry will be 36 next season with two more years left in his contract. Is it possibly time for the Warriors to consider a replacement?

In an interview with Sean Deveney of Heavy.com, an anonymous league exec said that they believe the Warriors should pursue Murray. The exec explained how the one-time All-Star would be a perfect fit in Golden State with Curry and eventually replace him:

"Of all the guys they might be able to trade for, he is probably realistic because he does not make a ton of money and they could add him," the exec said.
"Put him in Chris Paul's spot, give up two first-round picks and now you’ve gotten some defense in there. You've got another scorer in there, you have a guy who make some sense. He's 6-foot-5, he can guard three spots, he is an OK shooter and he won't break your bank."

The executive clarified that no player can ever replace Steph Curry, especially in the Golden State Warriors. However, the Warriors need to start thinking about the future because Curry won't be with the team forever.

Notably, Klay Thompson might be on his way out, while Draymond Green is likely to be gone if Curry leaves. The Warriors have a good young core of Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody and Trayce Jackson-Davis, though.

"No one is gonna replace Steph, but that team needs to look at everybody they might think of getting and ask, 'Steph Curry replacement?' If you can bring in Murray, you've got a point guard for the next five or 10 years if you want him. That's a start on replacing him," the exec said.

Can the Warriors acquire Dejounte Murray to pair with Steph Curry?

The Golden State Warriors paid the luxury tax for several years because it was the only way to have a championship roster. Now that the Warriors' title window appears to be closing, the team ownership wants to cut their losses and stop paying the luxury tax.

If the Warriors want to make a trade like acquiring Dejounte Murray, can they do it with their current roster and picks on hand? They have a few options like letting Klay Thompson hit free agency and trading a package involving Andrew Wiggins and a few players plus picks.

Another option is picking up Chris Paul's option and trading him to Atlanta along with two first-round picks. But if they want to save more money, they could let Thompson walk, not pick up Paul's contract and just trade Wiggins and some picks for Murray instead.
