Thomas initially attended Oscar F. Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia; and later graduated from Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, where he averaged a team-high 26.2 points, 3.4 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game, leading his team to a record of 31–5. Thomas led his high school team to the Tournament of Champions title, where he was named the MVP of the tournament. He earned a spot to play in the Jordan Brand Classic and was named Offensive Player of the Year at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League in July 2019. He was a five-star recruit according to Rivals, 247Sports, and ESPN.
