He initially played with Braunschweig’s development squad, most gaining playing time alongside his brother. He earned EuroBasket.com’s Most Improved Player honors for the 2010-11 season. After the 2011-12 season, Theis transferred to Ratiophram Ulm where he played 2 seasons. In the 2013-14 season, Theis won the BBL Best Young Player Award. After this, Theis went to play in the NBA and was signed by the Boston Celtics for the 2017-18 season. He played solid minutes off the bench for them and resigned back with the Celtics in 2019. In fact, he fits with the team so well that the Celtics coach, Brad Stevens, said that he complements the starters really well and ‘fits the other guys perfect’. In the 2020-21 season, the Celtics traded Theis to the Bulls where he was shipped off mid-season to the Houston Rockets. After spending half a season with the Houston Rockets, he was traded back to the Celtics in a mid-season deal. He spent two seasons with the Celtics before signing with the Indiana Pacers.
