Garland’s basketball career started at Brentwood Academy, where in his freshman season, he averaged 17.0 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists, leading his team to the Tennessee Division-II State AA Championship. As a consensus five-star recruit, Garland enrolled at Vanderbilt University in June 2018 and scored 24 points in his college debut. Unfortunately for him, his college career ended after just five games due to a meniscus injury. After weighing his options, Garland left Vanderbilt and declared for the 2019 NBA Draft.

Garland was selected as the fifth overall pick in the first round by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2019 NBA Draft. In the 2022/23 season for the Cavs, Garland was featured in 69 games and averaged 21.6 points and 7.8 assists per game. He shot 46.2%, including 41.0% from deep. In the same season, he led the team to their first playoff in five seasons, however, the team lost to the New York Knicks in the first round. In the 2023-24 season, Garland and Mitchell again led the Cavs to another playoff run, where he averaged 18.0 points, 6.5 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game.
