Keon Ellis' hometown is Eustis, Florida and attended Eustis High School and later transferred to Leesburg High School in his junior season. He helped his team to back-to-back Class 6A state titles. In his senior year, he averaged 12.7 points, 11 rebounds and two assists per game and led his team to a 29-1 record that year. He joined Florida SouthWestern State College and started averaging 8.3 points and three rebounds per game in his freshman season. He also scored 41 points in a 92-77 win against St. Petersburg College, which was a school record for highest points scored in a game.

Ellis picked up his stats the following season and averaged 18.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game as per his college profile. He was also named the Second-Team NJCAA Division I All-American and Suncoast Player of the Year that season.
