Born on April 17, 1997, in White Plains, New York, Matt Ryan is an American professional basketball player who plays as a small forward for the New Orleans Pelicans.

Ryan honed his basketball skills at Iona Prep High School, where he averaged 20.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists as a senior, leading his team to the program's first Class AA Archdiocesan Championship. He was awarded the title of Mr. New York Basketball and was also named on the Parade All-American team in 2015.

For college, Ryan attended multiple programs, including Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Chattanooga. In his senior season, Ryan played for Chattanooga and flourished, leading the team in points and defensive rebounds. He averaged 15.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists, and was named on the 2019-20 All-SoCon Second-team.

Ryan has signed multiple two-way contracts since entering the NBA and has spent most of his time in the G League with teams such as the Grand Rapids Gold, Maine Celtics, Iowa Wolves and Birmingham Squadron.

In the 2023/24 season, Ryan played 28 games, averaging career high in minutes, points, rebounds and 3-point percentage. He averaged 5.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game on 43.4% shooting from the field, including 45.1% from deep. He registered his career-high points (20), against the Detroit Pistons on November 2, 2023.

Recently, Ryan was signed to a standard contract by the Pelicans, and is eligible to play in the NBA playoffs. He was signed on a three-year $6.1 million deal.

Matt Ryan went undrafted in the 2020 NBA Draft. Since then, he has had short stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, LA Lakers and now the Pelicans, where he signed his first standard NBA contract.

He's also called the “Lakers Legend” on the internet, for his game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer against the Pelicans, the Lakers went on to win in overtime. He featured in 12 games for the Lakers before being waived. He then signed a two-way contract with the Timberwolves before joining the Pelicans.
