Toppin was selected with the eighth overall pick by the New York Knicks in the 2020 NBA Draft. In his rookie season with the Knicks, Toppin played 62 games, averaging 4.1 points and 2.2 rebounds in 11.0 minutes per game. In his second NBA season, he saw more playing time, averaging 9.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. After three seasons in New York, Toppin was traded to the Indiana Pacers in 2023. In his first season with the Pacers, Toppin was a key bench player who averaged 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game in the regular season.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Toppin attended Ossining High School. During high school, Toppin played basketball for four years. After high school, Toppin attended the University of Dayton. In his sophomore season in 2018-2019, he averaged 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Toppin was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year in 2020, and after two seasons in college, Toppin declared for the 2020 NBA Draft.
