Thon Marial Maker is a basketball player originating from South Sudan and Australia. A Center, he is on the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).

Born on February 25, 1997 in Wau, South Sudan, Thon Maker decided to become a basketball player in Australia. His career has taken him to the United States and Asia so far. In 2014, he became the Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year. Apart from this, he has become a well-known name in international basketball because of his skills and power. He has received interest from a lot of teams in his career and has played for them so far. He also competed for Australia in national levels.

Thon Maker won’t be playing in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup because he was removed from the team in an effort to trim down the team.

He was notable for scoring a season high of 16 points in a game against the Phoenix Suns on November 22, 2017. Additionally, he equaled his season high of 16 points against the Toronto Raptors on January 1, 2018. During Game 3 in the playoffs against the Boston Celtics, Thon Maker was notable for blocking 5 shots and scoring 14 points which helped the Milwaukee Bucks to win the game with a score of 2-1.

He again scored a season high of 15 points in a winning game against the Utah Jazz with a score of 114-102. Despite this, his role was decreased under new basketball coach Mike Budenholzer. He eventually asked for him to be traded to the team. The team complied with his request and traded him to the Detroit Pistons on February 7, 2019.

Detroit Pistons

This was Thon Maker’s second team in his basketball career. He was notable for sinking a tiebreaker 3-pointer with 16.7 remaining seconds in a winning game against the Atlanta Hawks with a score of 125-122 on February 22, 2019. After staying with the team for the remaining time of his contract, he became a free agent on November 19, 2020.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Next, Thon Maker’s journey took him to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of a training camp contract. He played 8 games for them in the 2020-2021 season. However, he was released by the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 13, 2021.

Hapoel Jerusalem Basketball Club

After the end of his NBA career, Thon Maker joined the Israel Basketball Premier League (Ligat HaAI) with the club Hapoel Jerusalem. He played a few games with the team by scoring 3.5 rebounds and 2.8 points. He eventually left the club on December 12, 2021.

Long Island Nets

Thon Maker again returned to the NBA. He joined the NBA G League with the Long Island Nets, known for their affiliation with the Brooklyn Nets. He was a member of the team for a few months and eventually left them.

Fujian Sturgeons

Thon Maker next signed with the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) on July 28, 2022. He has been playing for the team till the present time.

Australia National Basketball Team

Thon Maker is also a member of team Australia on the national level. He was initially chosen by Canada to play for them but he wanted to play for Australia. He joined team Australia on June 29, 2018 in a FIBA World Cup Qualifier opposite Japan.

As part of his national basketball career, Thon Maker was notable for involving himself in the brawl between Australian and Philippines players during their 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualification game. In that game, he was hit behind his head by Terrence Bill Romeo from team Philippines. Thon Maker, consequently, charged him down and aimed a kick at him which did not hit. Many players including Thon Maker were ejected from the game for this. He was also suspended for the next 3 games.

Next, Thon Maker participated in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia and won a gold medal for his contribution.

Thon Maker was removed from team Australia as part of reducing the team before the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
