As the current head coach of the Washington Wizards, Wes Unseld Jr. has garnered some very positive attention for his coaching efforts in recent years. However, his journey to reaching such levels of popularity in the NBA was anything but easy. Born in Catonsville, Maryland, Unseld Jr. grew up surrounded by basketball excellence.

Being the son of legendary Hall of Famer Wes Unseld Sr., Wes Jr. looked up to his father with the goal of one day living up to his father’s determination and hard work. Unseld Jr. was a top performer during his high school days, both in academics and on the court and even had a successful playing career at Loyola Blakefield Preparatory School which ended with young Unseld Jr. receiving scholarships from multiple colleges.

After visiting notable college programmes, he realized that most of them might not prioritize his essential playing minutes. Hence, Unseld Jr. decided to stay close to home and enrolled at John Hopkins University. After playing three years of college basketball, he decided to join the NBA.

Wes Unseld Jr. is 6 feet 7 inches tall. After almost a decade of persistent hard work as an NBA scout, Unseld Jr.’s dedication and expertise caught the attention of the Wizards’ front office and he was appointed assistant coach for the team in 2005.

Beginning his coaching career in 2005, Unseld Jr. served his team very well till 2011. During his time with the Wizards, Unseld Jr. was credited with improving the team’s offensive gameplay which earned the Wizards a valuable spot in the league’s top-ten offensive rankings from 2004 to 2007.

After he departed from Washington, Unseld Jr. had a one-year stint with the Golden State Warriors before being welcomed into the Orlando Magic coaching staff in 2012. In 2015, Unseld Jr. was appointed as the assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets and stayed involved with the team for six seasons.

During those six years, Unseld Jr. was an active part of the Nuggets’ development that culminated in the team winning its first NBA championship in 2023. In his last season before joining the Wizards, Unseld Jr. was the Nuggets associate head coach as he assisted his team to the 2021 WC semi-finals.

Since 2021, Wes Jr. has been the head coach of the Washington Wizards, having coached his team to a back-to-back 35-47 regular season record.
