Brussels, July 16 (IANS) Belgium sacked national team coach Marc Wilmots after the "intended goals had not been reached," the Royal Belgian Football Association, or URBSFA has announced.

In an official statement on its website, the Belgian Football Association on Friday said it had reached an agreement with Wilmots to terminate his contract, which was due to end in 2018, after the Russia World Cup.

"We would like to thank Marc Wilmots for his work during the last four years," said the statement, adding, however, that the URBSFA's technical commission have made an evaluation of the recent European championship and have declared that the intended goals have not been reached.

Under Wilmots' lead, the Belgian team rose from the 54th place in the FIFA ranking to the first, achieving 34 victories in 51 games.

However, according to URBSFA, "a new impulse" is necessary to improve the team's results.
