*Eibar take on Athletic Bilbao later tonight in what is a crunch Basque derby as the fight for Europe intensifies
The top 2: Barcelona and Real Madrid
After an incredible Clasico that was decided by a last-kick Leo Messi winner, the standings have suddenly take a whole new look. While I will not bore you with even more details of the match (for those who missed it and our live coverage, this analysis from the ever excellent Sunny Sagar should paint you the picture of what transpired as El Clasico lived up to its billings).
With the win, Barcelona move above Real Madrid thanks to the superior head-to-head record (it was 1-1 at the Camp Nou) – they also have a much better goal difference to boost them. Madrid, though, do have a game in hand.
Upcoming fixtures:
Barcelona – Barcelona vs Osasuna: Wednesday 26th April (11 P.M. IST) – should be a formality
Real Madrid – Deportivo vs Real Madrid: Wednesday 26th April (early morning the next day in India, 1 A.M. IST) – could be a tough one. Depor did after all beat Barca at the Riazor
Remaining opponents: Both teams face tricky run in as they power down the home stretch. Neither can afford even a minor slip up here.
Barcelona – Osasuna (H), Espanyol (A), Villareal (H), Las Palmas (A), Eibar (H)
Real Madrid – Deportivo (A), Valencia(H), Granada (A), Sevilla (H), Malaga (A), Celta Vigo (A)
The next 2: Atletico Madrid and Sevilla
The best of the rest, as it were. Atletico capped a fine week of football with a typical 1-0 win over Espanyol away while Sevilla seemed to have arrested their freefall as they ran away 2-0 winners at lowly Granada.
Neither are in any position to challenge the big 2 – not unless one of them implodes spectaculalry (never count that out – if only for pure tragi-comedy value), and the race for Champions League spots seems to have been sewn up two, but as both Diego Simeone and Jorge Sampaoli will appreciate, these things can go haywire in a split-second. They will look to keep up the pressure on each other as they host Villareal (a crunch match seeing as the visitors are fifth) and Celta Vigo respectively.
The Rest
Athletic Bilbao and Eibar’s encounter promises to be feisty and not just because it’s a local Basque derby. The two are seperated by just three points and are very much in contenton for a Europa League spot, and the winner here will have the upper hand as they push fellow Basques Real Sociedad as well as Villarreal all the way.
Malaga meanwhile pulled off a surprise 2-0 win over Valencia (ok, it’s Valencia, nothing is a surprise when it comes to that club) and are now comfortably out of the relegation zone. Leganes suffered a minor blow when they went down fighting to Villareal (2-1) but a Sporting-Osasuna draw (2-2) and Granada’s loss to Sevilla means none of the teams below them could take advantage. Deportivo, too, are still not completely out of it, their 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad compounding their worries ahead of the impending visit to the Riazor from Real Madrid.
