Kenyan football has no doubt produced some of the finest footballers in Africa over the years. Kenya has seen the likes of Dennis Oliech, Mc Donald Mariga, Bobby Ogolla and even Kenya’s finest ever captain Austin Origi.

Since the 80s, the country has been producing talents with no end in sight. Currently, the footballing scene is flooded by talent all around, mainly due to the revamp of the Kenyan Premier League. Midfielders have also not been left behind in terms of coming through. Many others have come through over the decade to follow up in the footsteps of Kenya’s best midfielder Allan Thigo.

Here’s how the top ten stack up.

#9 Samuel Onyango

At only 25-years-old, Samuel Onyango is currently starring for Kenya’s top side Gor Mahia. He came to the club after spells in Sony Sugar from 2012-2015, then Ulinzi Stars from 2016-2017. That’s a long journey for such a young man, but the fact that he currently plays for Gor says a lot.

He has talent, the temperate and the swagger to represent probably Kenya’s club of the decade. After an unprecedented 18th League, Gor needed to revamp their squad and Onyango has no doubt been a great addition to the side.

#8 Cliff Nyakeya

It is not often you see a player leave Gor for a team in the Kenyan Premier League. But that’s what Nyakeya did as a youth, and moved to Mathare United. Now, the ‘Slum Boys’ Mathare United as they’re popularly known had a good season last season. And it was mainly down to the great work being put in by Cliff where he scored 13 goals.

That prompted a move to Egyptian side FC Masr where he continues to impress.

#7 Boniface Muchiri

Another top talent to have come out of Kenya is Boniface Muchiri who also had an impressive 2018. He scored a whopping 11 goals from midfield for his team Tusker FC.

He moved to one of Kenya’s top sides Tusker after impressive spells at Sony Sugar and Nzoia Sugar. He has had two trials since that impressive season and it is safe to say he won’t be in the Kenyan Premier League for much longer.

#6 Whyvonne Isuza

Isuza for AFC Leopards

AFC Leopards hard man Isuza was certainly not going to miss this list. Any fan reading this would have expected his name to pop up sooner. From his midfield position, the midfielder helped AFC stay in the league with an impressive 7 goals.

He has been an ever-present figure in the AFC engine room, producing disciplined and purposeful performances. He is one of the league's consistent performers to date. That’s despite his team being a let-down for most of his playing career.

#5 Johanna Omollo

Despite playing for a team that is currently last in the Belgian League, Omollo remains one of Kenya’s top midfielders. Though he currently has to make due at center back at his club, it is in midfielder where he’s at home.

A combative and excellent one on one defensive midfielder, Omollo has the hallmarks of making at the top. His leadership qualities also make him one of the top midfielders in Kenya today. He had to make it to at least, the top five midfielders in Kenya.

#4 Eric Johanna Omondi

When the Swedish side Vasalunds IF came calling in 2017 for Omondi, it was no surprise to anyone. It was expected that his big move would come sooner rather than later. 22 games and 5 goals later, he got another move to in 2018 to IF Brommapojkarna.

He has continued to shine for his new and already has 6 goals from 43 appearances. His footballing career was started and natured at Mathare United where he ended up making 55 appearances and scoring 12 goals.

#3 Victor Wanyama

One of Kenya’s top talents of the decade has got to be Victor Wanyama. Most fans and critics alike would have expected him to be in the first position, but he comes in at third. That’s no disrespect to his talent and what he has been able to achieve. In fact, he would have been at the top of most lists due to his playing career in the English Premier League.

He’s the first player to play in the Premier League and, among only three players to have played in the Champions League. The Harambee Stars skipper is no doubt a talented midfielder and a leader in the team. His defensive attributes can certainly make any team in the world stronger.

#2 Kenneth Muguna

In the top two of the list, contains two of Kenya’s finest midfielders this decade. That Gor has managed to dominate the league this long has been largely part of these two players. At number two is Kenneth Muguna who currently plays for Albanian side KF Tirana.

After making exceptional performances for Gor, Muguna was bound a move abroad and it finally came at the end of last season. He quite literary stabilized Gor midfield and all their dominance was down to this exceptional midfield star.

#1 Francis Kahata

Francis Kahata has arguably been the top midfielder in the last decade. A wiz in the center of the park and his teams are never in lack of creativity when he plays. After journeys that have seen him move from Thika United to KF Tirana then Gor Kahata has only seen his stock grow in the center of the park.

His exploits for Gor since 2015 are what have propelled him to be Kenya’s top midfielder this decade. Gor’s dominance has largely been due to this playmaker and Gor would have been gutted losing him to Simba of Tanzania at the end of the season.
