Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Oher had a rough childhood growing up. He moved from one foster home to another for the better part of his early life. Oher attended Briarcrest Christian School where he played football for the first time. He was awarded a scholarship to the University of Mississippi for his incredible performances in high school. In college, he earned unanimous All-American honors. He was subsequently selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Oher went on to also play for the Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers during his NFL career.

Oher is currently retired. He is married and has four children. His tough childhood and life were portrayed in Michael Lewis' 2006 book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game. He was also the protagonist in the Academy Award-winning 2009 film The Blind Side.

Michael Oher's childhood was very difficult. His mother Denise Oher was addicted to crack cocaine and his father Michael Jerome Williams Sr. was frequently in jail. Oher spent the bulk of his childhood moving from one foster home to another. His life changed in 2004 when he wasted adopted by a wealthy white couple, Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy. The Tuohys took Oher in and gave him a loving home. He attended the Briarcrest Christian School, where he first played football. His continued excellence on the field in school earned him a scholarship to play football at the University of Mississippi.
