Ex-Cowboys beat writer explains Jerry Jones’ stance in Sean Payton race

Sean Payton is heavily pursued by multiple teams for the head coach position. Teams like the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, and Carolina Panthers are in the mix to get Payton, but the Dallas Cowboys are also linked with Payton.

The Cowboys' loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional round brought more pressure on Mike McCarthy. There are some who believe that Jerry Jones could make a run at Payton.

However, former Cowboys beat writer Matt Mosley believes it is unlikely that Jones will give away draft picks to bring Payton on board.

Here's what Matt Mosley said about Jerry Jones' stance on Sean Payton:

“He loves Sean, but Jerry doesn't respect coaches, it’s really the bottom line. But if the bottom line is the thought of trading draft picks for a head coach makes him laugh.
"Like in his mind, that would be a baffling thing to do and I do think you're onto something when Jerry likes comfortable hires. Wade Phillips, Mike McCarthy, and he just kind of likes people that will kind of do their thing, let Jerry be Jerry.”

After the loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Jerry Jones was devastated, but he did indicate that both Dak Prescott and head coach Mike McCarthy are likely to return next season.

As a result, a move for Sean Payton is looking unlikely for the Dallas Cowboys. However, Jerry Jones would like to make some changes to make his team better than it was this season.

The Denver Broncos are the frontrunners to land Sean Payton and their quarterback Russell Wilson wants to work with the former Saints head coach.

Wilson had a very poor season in his debut campaign in Denver and will benefit from having a veteran head coach like Payton. Considering that the Los Angeles Chargers want to bring back Brandon Staley, the Broncos seem like the best destination for Payton.

Unless Tom Brady calls on him to team up elsewhere, it seems very likely that Sean Payton will be the head coach of the Denver Broncos next season. It would be a tough challenge for him, but he is the right person for the job.
