Dean Ambrose is currently one of the most impressive characters on the WWE roster. He has managed to do well with the gimmick handed to him, and also keep his previous gimmicks from other promotions alive while playing his role in the company.

The eight Grand Slam Champion has done wonders for whichever brand he has been on, and become a solo headliner even after gaining popularity through The Shield.

As a member of The Shield, he has had much less championship success as compared to his former teammates and has rather shone brighter as an individual performer with the WWE. He managed to win his biggest prize in the form of the WWE Heavyweight Championship while the Shield was disbanded.

Even though a lot has been said and done about Dean Ambrose on screen, he may be a different character when off the screen. Therefore, there remains a lot which is unknown about the superstar.

Let’s take a look at a few interesting facts about The Lunatic Fringe that may help us know a bit more about him than we already know.

#4 His childhood

Dean Ambrose may be one of the biggest and most successful men on the screens today, but it was not always easy for him while growing up.

Hailing from East End, Cincinnati, Ambrose lived with his family in a public housing. He revealed during an interview in 2015 that growing up in his neighbourhood “every day was a struggle.”

He went on to add that “For instance, there were times that I would have to cave in and do something like selling somebody’s drugs, just so I wouldn’t get beaten half to death. But then there were other times where dudes would catch me walking by and try to push me around, and I had to draw a line, even if I was gonna get pulverized. I ended up earning respect that way — not that I cared, I just wanted out.”

Wrestling soon became his escape, as he dropped out of college to pursue his passion and followed his dream to become one of the best wrestlers in the industry.

It can be said that his in-ring ‘Lunatic Fringe’ persona has taken up a bit from his rough childhood.

#3 He’s extremely private

Just like on screen, Ambrose is known to be a silent guy in person too. He is usually private and does not reveal much about his personal life in interviews, on social media, or to the fans. He even managed to keep his relationship with Renee Young undercover for a while and the news about their marriage did not spread until two weeks after they got hitched.

It is notable that almost all wrestlers from the past and the present are active on social media. Whether it is Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, we have seen wrestlers make their presence felt to the fans through the internet too.

However, Ambrose is not like other wrestlers as can be seen on televisions. "I don't feel the need to open myself up to the opinion of everybody in the world with a phone or computer. I just don't get being connected to everybody on such a superficial level like that. It's not really for me." Ambrose has revealed.

His official Twitter account has no activity whatsoever except a single retweet from 2012. His Twitter biography reads, "They made me get a twitter.....Fine...Enjoy", possibly signalling towards the WWE asking him to connect with fans over social media.

#2 He got married at 1 a.m.

What’s a crazy guy who doesn’t do crazy things? It’s no secret now that Renee Young, WWE’s sweetheart interviewer and commentator, and Dean Ambrose were in a relationship. They got married some time back and seem to have a good relationship with each other.

Young was interviewed by E! News where she told the world that they already had a marriage license for six months when they decided to elope in their backyard at 1 a.m. courtesy of a pastor they found on Yelp. She went on to say:

“We were going to bed! We were going to bed and he like busted out the ring and we were like, ‘Oh man I guess we should do this now.’ so we ended up going on Yelp and we found a 24-hour pastor to come to our backyard. It was so handy and his name was pastor Pete and he lived around the corner from us, so he was there. They were very concerned by the way because it was 1 o’clock in the morning, so technically it was Sunday and they were very concerned about us calling, they were like, ‘is everything ok? Have you guys been drinking? What’s happening?’ we’re like, ‘it’s fine, you can come down.’ so we had to get a witness and we called and woke up a friend of ours and got it done.”

#1 His wrestling idol

Ambrose is one of the most unstable characters on screen today. His gimmick has worked extremely well in making the fans believe that he is indeed a lunatic.

He got hooked on to wrestling due to one of the biggest legends in the sport. He discovered ECW, and soon Bret Hart became his favourite wrestler. Even though his gimmick is nowhere similar to The Hitman’s, he idolized Hart to a great extent.

In 2015, the lunatic revealed that he “was never a Hulkamaniac” when growing up. Instead, he liked Bret Hart for the reason that “he was the realistic, relatable guy” among a “giant litany of bullies” and that Hart always found a way “to outsmart them, out trick them, outlast them.”

Since Ambrose had a really rough upbringing, it makes sense that Bret Hart’s character helped him stay focused and decide what he wanted to do in his life.
