Thomas Detry finds himself with a Masters invitation after last-minute heroics at the 2024 PGA Championship

Thomas Detry secured a career-best finish in a Major tournament with his last-minute putt at the PGA Championship. On the 18th hole, to wrap up his pretty spectacular outing, Detry nailed a birdie that dropped his score to -15. That proved to be incredibly significant in more ways than one.

Obviously, it moved him up slightly on the leaderboard and gave him his best outing, but it also secured an invitation to the Masters in 2024. Detry's birdie put him into a tie for fourth with Collin Morikawa.

That is impressive in its own right, but it also allows him to play at Augusta National in 2025. The Masters invites players who were top five at the other Majors the year before.

Therefore, everyone who placed in the top five is assured of an invite, and that includes Detry now thanks to his birdie. If he'd parred that hole, he would have been tied for sixth with Justin Rose and Shane Lowry, and things would have looked very different.

Detry put together a consistent performance across all four rounds. He shot 66 in round one, followed it up with a round two 67, a round three 70, and closed with another 66 that was just enough to land within the top five.

He was tied with Collin Morikawa, both of whom came behind Viktor Hovland (-18), Bryson DeChambeau (-20), and winner Xander Schauffele (-21). Detry's previous best was a T13 at the Open Championship in 2023.

Thomas Detry has been up and down in 2024. The PGA Championship was easily one of his better outings, and it is impressive that it came on such a stage. He will look to continue his good play at the next Major, but he hasn't been all that consistent in 2024.

Out of 13 events played, he has zero wins, one runner-up, four top 10 finishes, and four missed cuts. That runner-up finish came in the Houston Open, where he and quite a few others (including Scottie Scheffler) tied for second behind Stephan Jaeger.
