She is known to ride roughshod over her opponents on the boxing ring. She likes to instill the fear factor in her opponents. Yes, five-time world champion and 2012 London Olympic boxing bronze medallist M.C. Mary Kom is a menacing figure on the boxing ring.

But for a change, the champion pugilist from Manipur now wears a more mellowed look as she underwent a gallbladder surgery to remove gallstones at the Imphal-based Shija Hospitals and Research Institute on Wednesday morning.

According to Mary Kom’s family sources, the nimble-footed boxer is recuperating and is expected to be discharged from hospital soon. It is learnt that a medical team led by Dr Sorokhaibam Jugindro conducted the keyhole surgery.

The surgery was a forty minute affair which saw doctors remove 26 small stones and the gallbladder.

Family sources say the stone-removing surgery is unlikely to affect her boxing career – in fact, it is expected that Mary’s performance will only improve once her ailment is fully cured.

The boxer, who picked up a coveted bronze medal in the 51-kg in London, had to be admitted to the Shija Hospitals and Research Institute after she complained of severe pain in the upper abdomen.

It may be worth mentioning that the star boxer is spending more time at home, sans the boxing gloves after the birth of her third son Prince Chungthanglen Kom four months ago.

Mary is married to K Onler Kom and has twin sons, Rechungvar and Khupneivar apart from the recently-born third son.

This is the third surgery for the boxer.

Mary is determined to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics and has lined up her plans for the same.

Mary’s husband, Onkholer Kom has became quite famous for his behind-the-scene role in taking care of her sons when she is away from home boxing at various national and international competitions.

The boxer runs the Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation in Imphal.

It may be pertinent to mention that the Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation attracted the eyeballs recently when the National Sports Development Fund’s (NSDF) Executive Committee (EC) approved additional financial assistance for construction of an outdoor boxing hall at her academy.

Further, the committee also decided that the the regional centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) would regularly monitor the outdoor hall construction project.

The NSDF had earlier approved Rs.306.44 lakh for the Olympic bronze medallist’s foundation in May, for the construction of a gymnasium and procurement of gym equipments.
