FIA presidential candidate David Ward has said that he would set up an investigation about the suitability of Bahrain to host a Grand Prix if he is elected.

“The important thing is to be neutral. What is merited is an investigatory visit. Look at things on the ground, talk to all sides as far as is possible and make a judgments based on that,” Ward said.

The 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix was cancelled due to civil unrest but was brought back to last year’s calendar by current FIA president Jean Todt, a decision which Ward criticized by saying that F1 crossed over lines to allocate the race.

“If it looks like the situation is deteriorating or not improving, what there should be – because this could happen tomorrow in another part of the world – is a standard process to handle this, that is immune from suggestions that one place is being treated differently from another,” he said.

Ward added that he is running for the presidency because he sees failures in the current system.

“The reasons I’m running is I can see failures going on in terms of governance that I think are quite serious,” he said.
